On the 11th May 24 young people from the Parish were confirmed by Bishop Kieran at Arundel Cathedral. This is the third year in a row that we have had over 20 young people complete the programme of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This time the programme was much shorter that previous years, starting after Christmas with monthly meetings through to May and included a very enjoyable weekend away at Lodge Hill centre just outside Pulborough.
The programme helped the young people explore what it means to be a Catholic Christian in today's world covering, among other things, Catholic beliefs, how the Holy Spirit is at work in their lives, practical ways in which they can express their Christianity and get involved in the Church and how the gifts of the Holy Spirit can help them make the right choices in life.
There was a barbecue at St. Richard's on 1st June as a way of celebrating the event to which the young people and their families were invited. The sun shone and a great time was had by all. The young people will be presented with certificates to record their achievement at the Parish Mass on 6th July. Our prayers go with them as they move on in their lives as adult Catholics.
This year, following the departure of Paul Andrewartha the Parish youth co-ordinator, there were three new catechists involved in helping the young people prepare for the Sacrament so it was a new experience for many. Our thanks go to Helen Loftus and Michael Silver who had been involved in Confirmation preparation in the Parish for many years.
