Celebration - 25th Anniversary, Deacon Hilary's ordination

Memories of Deacon Hilary at St Richard's Jubilee Mass, May 2008 and his anniversary party, June 27th 2009

Deacon Hilary Parsons was ordained at St Richard's 25 years ago. He served here until 1996. Last year he returned to assist as Deacon at the Celebration Mass, in the presence of Bishop Kieron and Cardinal Cormac, who, as Bishop, ordained him.

Christopher Dwyer writes: " On Saturday, 27th June, following the evening Mass, we held a party to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hilary Parsons’ ordination to the diaconate.

At the Mass, Deacon Hilary gave us one of the thought-provoking homilies for which he is remembered, and showed that he has lost none of his oratorical gifts. His theme too - the distinction between the institutional Church and the Kingdom of God - is one rarely heard in Catholic sermons.

The party was blessed with warm sunshine, and we were able to make full use of the church garden, But first we had to pass through a room with tables groaning with food, arranged by the courtesy and skill of our caterers Mr and Mrs Forey, with assistance from a few parishioners too modest to claim any credit.

Deacon Hilary was also presented with a commemorative gift at Mass, and Fr Kieron expressed our hope that we shall still see more of him."
