Jubilee Project for St Richard's - 2008

"Our aim is to make St Richard’s a church for the 21st century where everyone will receive a warm welcome and enjoy the services and sacraments to the full."

Over the past few years priests and parishioners have identified the following opportunities for improving the facilities at St. Richard's Church.

• the need for a larger gathering/welcoming area to replace the current porch

• to make better use of the canopied area between the bell tower and Blessed Sacrament Chapel

• to re-locate the font to its rightful place of prominence in the church

• to re-design the reconciliation room to comply with child-protection guidelines

• to provide extra seating within the main body of the church

A group of parishioners has been working with me over the last couple of years in order to address these issues and we are now happy to publish a provisional impression for your perusal and discussion.

Why now?

• During family masses and major feasts the church is often uncomfortably full

• We need to bring the church into line with current liturgical practice

• The church has been recommended for listing - this means that alterations will be V.A.T. exempt!

• What better way to celebrate 50 years of St Richards?

Guiding Principles:

• There will be full consultation with the Parish before any decisions are taken

• Funding must be assured before any work commences

• The project must have the backing of the Bishop

• The building can be "phased" if necessary to ensure that we do not overstretch our resources

Please discuss this with your families, parish groups and friends! Open Parish Meetings were held on May 16th 2006 and 22nd May 2007, and parish-wide consultations will follow. (See Parish/Pastoral index). Any comments or suggestions will be gratefully received - in writing to the Parish Office or by e-mail to Fr Kieron:kieron@chicathchurch".

The artist's impressions show the new setting, and the first proposed design for the narthex - the welcome area.
